I know this blog is part of the development of the course, so maybe it's not kosher for me to post here, but here goes anyway.

I have to take issue with the following statement:

"I also have serious concerns about the ways in which the project is not serious or considerate about how important context is to meaning in culture. It seems rushed - and there is no incentivizing meaning beyond the pop of it."

There seems to be a persistent confusion about exactly what ArtPrize seeks to do, and exactly what it is. We're inviting artists, curators, critics, students, taste-makers, etc. to create their own context, and yes, that context is crucial. In a traditional institutional model, I might be the Curator, and I would have authority predetermine the context, and I would combine pieces of cultural output (both works of art and the theory surrounding those works) into my context. The importance of context would never be questioned, because I'd be the one creating it, and the entire thing would be predicated on that context. In the ArtPrize model, we've ceded control of the creation of context to the doers, the thinkers, and the makers. In other words, you.

I've been a strong advocate for Civic Studio's involvement in ArtPrize because I know that it's a local institution that can fill the vacuum that ArtPrize creates both critically and contextually. The vacuum is intentional, and you're right, it will probably be a bit messy.

I'm excited to see that this has already begun. As much are we're looking for participants to own the event and form it into what they think it should be, we're also aware that the spectacle of the prize and vote has already sent the discussion in a certain direction. This is the vacuum I'm talking about. Why is it a spectacle? What are the benefits and drawbacks of a spectacle? What is the art-historical precedent of spectacle? These aren't questions ArtPrize proper is seeking to answer, but they are certainly questions we want to be asked.

I printed an image on a sample of this and have it in my yard. It has gotten wet and really holds up visually. And physically it is very tough. You can't tear it by hand.

From late August to mid December, the Civic Studio will continue their research into the city of Grand Rapids. From extended engagement, situations and contexts emerge. During Artprize, the studio will present their ongoing studio work to the public and invite the visitors to join in dialogue about the relationship of art and the public.
